On April 1917, over 15,000 Canadians fought in the war. The operation was intended to overrun German forces all along the fort. At 5:30 a.m., four Canadian divisions stormed the ridge, and it was a success. Though it was a victory, 3,598 were killed and were now mourned at the Vimy Ridge Memorial.
